In 1967, in Northern California, deep in the Six Rivers National Forest near a place called Willow Creek, a rancher named Robert “Bob” Gimlin and a thirty-four-year-old rodeo rider, Roger Patterson, set out on a logging road to examine three sets of different-sized footprints. Gimlin was excited to see fresh Bigfoot footprints because he had never seen them before, and Patterson hoped to finish a documentary he’d been working on. He’d recently published a book and thought one form of media would surely complement the other.

Since Bob had been laid off from a seasonal job and Roger had secured funding for the project, the men left shortly after Labor Day weekend, canvassing miles of the area around Bluff Creek, searching for traces of the creature that had quickly become an obsession. They hunted for weeks with little result until October 20.

The men had been riding for several hours, with Bob leading a packhorse behind them. They’d been over the terrain before, but this time, as they traveled along Bluff Creek under a canopy of fall color, the horses became skittish—Roger’s more so, as he wasn’t as skilled a horseman as Bob.
